Can you believe that human skulls were used as a football (soccer ball), before galvanized rubber was invented? Thanks to the evolution that we can play a more humane game.
Record says that in ancient times, the Chinese, the Red Indians and the Egyptians have been playing some form of football or the other. Animal skulls, stitched cloth, cow and pig bladder and even human skulls have been used as footballs.
It’s not until the 18th century that football took its crude shape with Charles Goodyear who invented vulcanized rubber, which eventually was used as the material in football. Soon after in 1872, England Football Association enforced a rule regarding the football’s shape and size. The law stated that the ball used for playing football must be spherical with a circumference of 27 to 28 inches. This century old rule is still being followed by FIFA today.
Nowadays, a lot of research is being carried out on football. Manufacturers are not only trying to make footballs that are waterproof, accurate and player safe, but are also trying to make them technologically upgraded by stitching together 32 panels of leather or plastic with 12 regular pentagons and 20 regular hexagons.
